"The Great Facebook Kiss-in" was a call to action by the Huffington Post's editor-at-large Michelangelo Signorile after sports fans expressed discomfort when Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL, celebrated with a kiss with his boyfriend. "People just aren't used to seeing two men or two women kissing, even with all the news coverage of gay marriage," wrote Signorile. Straight couples kiss all the time; so why shouldn't LGBT couples?. "Gay people need to be kissing more in public. There simply needs to be more queer smooching to desensitize the world."
